Structural functionalism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some thinkers look at society as a big system. They believe all parts work together to keep things steady. This idea is called structural functionalism.

Herbert Spencer
Herbert Spencer

Herbert Spencer used a special idea to explain this. He said society is like a human body. In a body, organs work to keep you alive. In a society, different parts work to keep the group going. These parts include families and jobs.

Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim

Émile Durkheim also studied how groups stay together. He said old groups stayed close through shared values. He called this mechanical solidarity. Modern groups are different. In these groups, people do many different tasks. They rely on each other to survive. He called this organic solidarity.

Auguste Comte was the first to use the word sociology. He thought society moves through three stages. It moves from religious views to scientific views. Talcott Parsons later wrote about how people act in these systems. He said people follow rules called norms. When people follow these rules, they fill a role. These roles help the whole system work.
