Symbolic interactionism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Symbolic interactionism is a special way to study how people live together. It is a theory used in social psychology and microsociology. This theory looks at how we use shared language to make meaning. We use symbols to talk to ourselves and to others. These symbols can be words or even gestures. This helps us build a world we all understand.

Through these small daily moments, we create our whole society. It is a framework that shows how people shape their own lives.

This way of thinking works through a few important steps. First, people act toward things based on the meanings they give them. These meanings are not just there; we create them through interaction. Second, these meanings come from talking and acting with other people. We do not just react to things like a machine. Instead, we interpret what is happening first. Third, we use an inner conversation to handle these meanings. Mead called this inner talk "minding." It is the way we think before we act.

Many thinkers helped build this idea over a long time. George Herbert Mead was a very important leader in this field. He was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, in 1863. He taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago. Mead never wrote a single book about his big ideas. After he died in 1931, his students wrote a book for him. They called it "Mind, Self and Society."

Other people added important pieces to the story too. Herbert Blumer was a student of Mead. He was the one who actually named the theory "symbolic interactionism." He believed that talking to each other is the most human thing we do. Another thinker named Charles Horton Cooley was also very influential. He came up with the idea of the "looking-glass self." This idea helped Mead understand how we see ourselves.

Other names like W. I. Thomas also helped shape the theory.

This theory helps us understand many parts of our world. It shows how we learn to play roles, like when children play house. We use "role-taking" to see things from another person's view. This helps us understand what our actions might mean to them. The theory is used in many jobs today. It can be used in courts of law or in health care. It even helps people who design computer software.
