Social constructionism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People create many ideas together. We call this social constructionism. This idea says that many things we believe are not physical objects. Instead, people make them through talking and working together.

Think about money. A dollar bill is just paper. But we all agree it has value. This makes it real in our daily lives. Other examples include language, time, and even rules for how to act. These ideas can change from one culture to another. They are not the same everywhere.

Each person also has a personal view of the world. In 1922, Walter Lippmann said the real world is too big to know fully. He said people build a mental image to help them live.

These ideas shape how we act. They can even shape how we see ourselves. For example, how we think about gender or social class comes from these shared ideas. If people stopped believing in these ideas, they would cease to exist. We build our world, and our world builds us.
