Marshall Sahlins was a famous American scholar. He studied how people live and think. This field of study is called anthropology. He spent much time in Fiji and Hawaii. He wanted to know how culture shapes us.

Sahlins believed that culture is very powerful. He said culture shapes how we see the world. He also believed that people have agency. Agency means people have the power to make history happen. They are not just shaped by rules. They can change things through their own choices.

He studied how groups share goods. He wrote a book called "Stone Age Economics." He argued that cultural rules guide how people trade. He also wrote about how people understand history. He thought different cultures have their own ways of being smart.

Sahlins was also a man of action. He spoke up for what he believed was right. He used his voice to protest wars. He even resigned from a science group to show his views. He worked hard until his death in 2021. Even when he was sick, he told his son his ideas. He wanted to finish his last book.
