A tenor is a type of male singing voice. It is the highest voice for men using the chest voice. The name comes from a Latin word that means "to hold."

In a choir, the tenor is the second lowest voice. He sings above the bass but below the alto and soprano. Many men prefer to sing in the bass part. This can make it hard to find enough tenors for a choir.

There are many kinds of tenor voices. A leggero tenor has a light and fast voice. He can sing many quick notes. A lyric tenor has a warm and bright voice. He can sing loudly over an orchestra.

Some voices are much heavier. A spinto tenor is bright but has more weight. A dramatic tenor has a very powerful and heroic sound. There is also a heldentenor. This is a rich and dark voice used in German operas. These singers need great power and stamina to sing long roles.
