Double bass

The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched chordophone in the modern symphony orchestra.

A chordophone is an instrument that produces sound through vibrating strings. Because of its deep range, it serves as a foundation for many musical ensembles. It is a standard member of the orchestral string section alongside violins, violas, and cellos. People also call it the upright bass, acoustic bass, or string bass. In certain genres, musicians use names like the bass fiddle or bull fiddle. This instrument is essential for providing a steady, low-frequency pulse in various musical settings.

Playing the double bass requires specific physical techniques to manipulate the strings.

A player can use a bow, a technique known as arco. This involves drawing the bow across the strings to create sustained notes. Another common method is pizzicato, which means plucking the strings with the fingers. In rockabilly and rock and roll, players may even use a slapping technique.

Classical musicians often focus on bowing to master complex articulations. These include staccato, which produces short notes, and legato, which creates smooth connections. Jazz musicians, however, often prioritize virtuoso pizzicato skills to play rapid lines.

The physical construction of the double bass is unique among string instruments.

It is typically built using specific types of wood for different parts. The top is often made of spruce, while the back is made of maple. The fingerboard, which the player presses against to change notes, is usually ebony.

Inside the instrument, a thick soundpost transmits vibrations from the top to the bottom. Unlike the violin family, which is tuned in fifths, the double bass is tuned in fourths. The standard open strings are usually tuned to E1, A1, D2, and G2. This tuning allows the instrument to cover a massive range of low pitches.

There are several distinct design shapes for the double bass.

The most common is the violin form, which features a carved, rounded back. Another style is the viola da gamba form, which often has a flat, angled back. A less common design is called the busetto shape. Some rare versions even follow a guitar or pear shape. The shoulders of the instrument are also a key feature. Most double basses have sloped shoulders to help the player reach higher notes. This design choice distinguishes them from the bulging shoulders seen on violins.

The history of the double bass is a subject of ongoing scholarly debate.

It is generally considered a descendant of the violone, a large instrument from the 15th century. Scholars disagree on whether it belongs more to the viol family or the violin family. Some researchers argue that the internal construction is almost identical to the violin family. Others suggest that the modern bass is not a true member of either family. Many early instruments were actually conversions of existing violones. For example, some six-string instruments were modified to become modern basses.

Size is a critical factor in how the instrument is used and played.

A traditional full-size bass stands approximately 6 feet tall from the scroll to the endpin. However, a common size used by many modern players is slightly smaller. This common size is about 15% smaller than the full-size model. Other sizes, such as 3/4 or 1/2, exist to accommodate different player heights. These variations allow musicians with different hand sizes to perform effectively. The instrument's large scale length is vital for producing its rich, resonant tone.

The double bass connects to many different musical worlds and genres.

In classical music, it provides a deep, mighty, or even menacing effect in loud passages. In jazz, bassists play rapid "walking basslines" to maintain rhythm and melody.

The instrument is also vital in blues, bluegrass, tango, and folk music. It even appears in modern film and video game soundtracks. Whether it is amplified in funk or played acoustically in bluegrass, the bass remains a central tool for musical expression.
