Capra's journey to movies began with many different jobs. He grew up in a poor area of Los Angeles. He sold newspapers for ten years to help his family. Later, he studied chemical engineering in college. He worked many odd jobs like cleaning engines and waiting tables.

His science background helped him when movies started using sound. While other directors found sound technology difficult, Capra understood it well. He used his engineering skills to master this new way of filmmaking.

His early life started in a small Italian village. He was born Francesco Rosario Capra in 1897. His family moved to the United States when he was five. They traveled on a steamship called the Germania. When they arrived in New York, he saw the Statue of Liberty.

Capra later became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1920. He chose the name Frank Russell Capra. This was a big change from his original Italian name.

Capra worked hard to build his career in Hollywood. He started by directing a small silent film for $75. Later, he joined a studio called Columbia Pictures. He worked with a leader named Harry Cohn. Cohn gave Capra the freedom to share his own ideas.

Some of his most famous work grew in value over time. His movie *It's a Wonderful Life* did not do well when it first came out in 1946.

However, critics later decided it was a very special film. Today, his movies are still highly respected by people everywhere. He also helped lead important groups for film workers. He served as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His life shows how a person can change the world through art.
