Preston Sturges was a famous American filmmaker who changed how movies were made. He worked as a playwright, an inventor, and a screenwriter. Most importantly, he was a director who wrote his own stories.

Before Sturges, most directors did not start as successful writers. He proved that a writer could also lead a film crew. This created a new tradition of making movies that felt very personal. His films were often smart, fast, and very funny. This new way of working opened doors for many future filmmakers.

Sturges had a very unique way of making his deals with movie studios. In 1939, he wanted to direct his own film called The Great McGinty. He made a surprising trade with Paramount Pictures to make this happen. He sold the story for only ten dollars!

In exchange for that small amount of money, he got to direct. This was the first time in the history of "talkies" that a person was credited as both the writer and director on screen. It was a bold move that showed his big dreams.

His life began in Chicago on August 29, 1898. His mother, Mary Desti, was a singer who lived in Paris.

Because his mother traveled so much, Sturges spent much of his youth in France. He became very good at speaking French and loved the country. He even traveled with a famous dance company led by Isadora Duncan. Later, he worked as a runner for stock brokers in New York. He also served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Service.

Sturges became a star in Hollywood during the 1940s. He won the very first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Great McGinty.

He was also nominated for awards for two other films in 1944. These were called The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero. Between 1939 and 1944, he made many famous comedies. Some of these, like The Lady Eve and Sullivan's Travels, are still called classics today.

He even owned a restaurant called The Players on Sunset Boulevard.

Even though he was very successful, his life had many different sides. He was sometimes very wealthy and sometimes had to borrow money. He loved working with the same group of actors in his movies. Some studio bosses worried that people would get tired of seeing the same faces. However, Sturges believed his actors had a right to work with him. He was a man of many talents and many contradictions. He remains a very important figure in the history of American comedy.
