As a teenager, he moved to Chicago to start his career. He worked as a reporter for the Chicago Daily Journal and the Chicago Daily News. He said he "haunted" the streets of the city. He visited places like courtrooms, police stations, and theaters. He even visited places like jails and slums to find stories. This helped him find the real life needed for his writing. He used these experiences to write many books and articles.

His writing career began with journalism and books.

In 1921, he wrote his first successful novel called Erik Dorn. This book was based on his time as a war reporter in Berlin. He also had a very popular newspaper column called One Thousand and One Afternoons. Later, he wrote many plays, such as the Broadway hit The Front Page. He was known for his imaginative style. He used bright imagery and metaphors to make his writing stand out. He often fought against people who tried to censor art or books.

Hecht's life also involved deep personal beliefs and hard times. He became an active Zionist after meeting Peter Bergson. This led him to write plays like We Will Never Die in 1943. He also wrote A Flag is Born in 1946. Because of his support for certain actions in Palestine, some people boycotted his work. To keep working, he sometimes wrote movie scripts without using his real name.
