An art director creates the visual world of a movie. They design the sets where the actors perform their stories. Gibbons worked on more than 2,000 films during his long career. He was a leader at the famous MGM studio. His work helped define how movies looked for many years. People still admire the beautiful worlds he created on screen.

Gibbons used a special design style to make his sets look great. This style is often called Art Deco or Art Moderne. It uses sleek and bold shapes to create a modern look. He used this knowledge to help with the film Ben Hur in 1925. His designs even changed how movie theaters were built in real life. Many theaters in California still use his ideas today. These buildings often have sweeping, scroll-like details that look very elegant.

Gibbons had a very busy and successful life in the arts. He was born in New York City in 1890. His father, Austin P. Gibbons, was an architect. Cedric studied art at the Art Students League of New York in 1911. He worked as a junior draftsman before moving into film. He also served in the US Navy Reserves during World War I. Later, he became a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One of his most famous jobs was designing a special award. In 1928, he designed the Oscar statuette.
