Flip-flops are light, casual shoes that people love to wear.

They are easy to slip on for a day at the beach or a walk in the sun. A flip-flop has a flat sole and a Y-shaped strap called a toe thong. This strap passes between your first and second toes and wraps around the sides of your foot.

The name "flip-flop" might come from the sound they make when you walk. Many people call them different names depending on where they live. In Australia, they are called thongs or pluggers. In New Zealand, people call them jandals.

In the Philippines, they are called tsinelas, and in India, they are known as chappals.

Making these sandals is a simple process with many ways to do it. Modern flip-flops are often made of rubber, plastic, foam, or leather. Some even use cloth or suede.

Because they are so easy to make, they can be very inexpensive. Some companies even use recycled materials like old bicycle tires or hemp to help the planet. In the past, people used whatever they could find in nature. Ancient Egyptians used palm leaves or papyrus. In China and Japan, people used rice straw. The Maasai people in Africa used rawhide, while people in Mexico used the yucca plant.

People have worn toe sandals for thousands of years.

We can see pictures of them in ancient Egyptian murals from 4,000 BC. The modern style we see today became popular in the United States after World War II. American soldiers saw Japanese sandals called zōri while they were in Japan.

When the soldiers came home, they brought the idea with them. By the 1960s, flip-flops became a huge part of the beach lifestyle in California. They were the perfect accessory to wear with shorts or a bathing suit.

Today, the flip-flop is a massive global industry. In 1962, a company in Brazil began selling a famous version called Havaianas. By 2019, they were making more than 200 million pairs every year.

Flip-flops are everywhere, from high-end fashion models to simple basics. You can even find them with charms, beads, or bright colors. They are so common that in 2006, sales of flip-flops were higher than sales of sneakers. Even famous people like Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama have been seen wearing them. They are a part of life for millions of people around the world.

While they are fun, there are things to remember when wearing them. They protect your feet from hot sand, sharp rocks, or broken glass. However, they do not protect your feet from the sun, so you must use sunscreen. Walking in them for a long time can sometimes make your feet or ankles sore. Some people even wear special socks called tabi with their sandals to stay comfortable. In sports, it is better to wear different shoes to avoid hurting your ankles. Even in sports, they can be part of the fun, like in the game Tumbang preso. In this game, people try to knock over a can by throwing a flip-flop.
