Goat farming is a specialized branch of animal husbandry.

This practice involves the raising and breeding of domestic goats, known scientifically as Capra aegagrus hircus. Farmers manage these animals to provide several essential resources for human use. Most goat farming focuses on producing meat, milk, fiber, and skins. Because goats are highly adaptable, they provide a stable source of nutrition and materials. This makes goat farming a vital part of agricultural systems across the globe.

The process of goat farming relies on the animal's unique digestive capabilities. Goats are herbivores that can efficiently convert sub-quality grazing matter into quality lean meat.

This means they eat vegetation that other livestock, such as cattle or sheep, might decline. They are particularly skilled at browsing, which involves eating leaves and shrubs rather than just grass. Their agility allows them to climb trees to reach food sources. This ability helps them thrive even when resources are limited or pastures are small.

Dietary preferences play a major role in how a goat herd grows. Goats show a strong preference for certain types of browse and specific plants. They enjoy eating Multiflora Rose, Briar, Ironweed, Ragweed, Spiny Amaranth, and Pigweed. However, they are less fond of common grasses like Tall Fescue, Bermuda Grass, Orchard Grass, and Crab Grass.

Because they can subsist on poor land, goat herds are an important asset in sparse regions. They turn low-quality vegetation into valuable products that humans can use.

Goat farming can be organized into different types based on the desired product. Some farmers focus on the dairy industry to produce goat milk.

In these operations, male goats, often called billy goats, are generally not required. In the United Kingdom, approximately 30,000 billy goats from the dairy industry are slaughtered for meat each year. Other farmers focus on meat production, such as those raising the Boer goat.

These different methods allow farmers to meet specific market needs for food and fiber.

Global statistics show that goat farming is a massive international industry. As of 2022, India stood as the largest producer of goat milk in the world. In 2024, the global milk market saw New Zealand act as the top exporter. During that same year, the United States of America was the largest importer of goat milk. These figures highlight how interconnected the trade of goat products has become between different continents.

Different regions contribute varying amounts to the total global production. Africa holds a massive population of 294.5 million animals. Asia follows with a total of 511.3 million goats. In terms of meat, Asia produces 3.4 million metric tons.

Within the United States, meat goat farming occurs in every single state. While it happens nationwide, most production is concentrated in the Southeast. Texas is the primary leader in the US, representing 38% of the country's meat goat production.

Goat farming relates to broader concepts of land management and resource efficiency. It is highly suited for production alongside other livestock like sheep and cattle. This is especially true on low-quality grazing land where resources are scarce. By using goats, farmers can utilize land that might otherwise be unproductive for larger animals. This ability to turn sub-quality vegetation into protein makes goat farming a key part of sustainable animal husbandry.
