Some scholars say he ruled from March 1186 to April 1155 BC. This means he ruled for about 31 years. He is known as the last pharaoh with great power in the New Kingdom. His name had many meanings in his language. One name meant he was the "Beloved of Amun." He was the son of a man named Setnakhte.

Ramesses III was a strong warrior king. He had to defend Egypt from many invaders. These groups were known as the Sea Peoples. They included people called the Peleset and the Denyen.

He fought them in two huge battles. The first was a land battle in a place called Djahy. The second was a sea battle in the Nile Delta. He used archers to shoot arrows at enemy ships. His navy used grappling hooks to pull ships close. He also fought against tribes from Libya.

War was very expensive for the Egyptian government. The cost of fighting made the treasury run low. This caused economic problems for the whole land.

There were also problems with food and grain. In his 29th year, workers went on their first known strike. These workers were the tomb-builders at a village called Deir el-Medina. They stopped working because they did not get enough food. Some people think a volcano eruption made the weather change. This change might have made it harder to grow grain.

Ramesses III built many grand things during his reign. He built large additions to the temples at Luxor and Karnak.

He also built a huge temple at Medinet Habu. This temple is one of the largest in Egypt. Because times were uncertain, he built big walls to protect it. No other temple in the heart of Egypt needed such walls before him. He also had a large red granite sarcophagus.

This plan was led by a wife named Tiye and her son Pentawere. They wanted to change who would be the next king. Modern doctors used CT scans to look at his mummy. They found a deep wound on his throat from a knife. After he died, his son Ramesses IV became the new pharaoh. This event caused more trouble for Egypt in the years that followed.
