Most scholars believe he reigned from March 1186 to April 1155 BC. This period lasted approximately 31 years, 1 month, and 19 days. He is remembered as the last pharaoh of the New Kingdom to hold significant power. His names carried deep religious meanings. One translation is "The Ma'at of Ra is strong, Beloved of Amun, Born of Ra, Ruler of Heliopolis."

Ramesses III was a soldier king who defended Egypt during a time of global chaos. This era is known as the Late Bronze Age collapse. During his eighth year of rule, groups known as the Sea Peoples invaded Egypt. These groups included the Peleset, Denyen, Shardana, Tjekker, and the Meshwesh of the sea.

He fought them in two massive conflicts. First, he defeated them on land at the Battle of Djahy in modern-day southern Lebanon. Second, he fought the Battle of the Delta. In this sea battle, he used an ambush fleet in the Nile mouth. Egyptian archers fired continuous volleys of arrows at the enemy ships. The navy then used grappling hooks to pull the ships closer for hand-to-hand combat.

Beyond the Sea Peoples, Ramesses III also faced threats from Libyan tribes. He fought two major campaigns against them in the Western Delta during his fifth and eleventh years. These wars were successful, but they were very expensive. The high cost of military defense exhausted the Egyptian treasury. This spending contributed to the gradual decline of Egypt's influence in Asia. The king also had to protect his borders and his people from constant instability.

Economic problems also troubled his reign. In his 29th year, the first recorded labor strike in history occurred. Workers at the village of Deir el-Medina stopped working because they did not receive their food rations. These artisans were the elite builders of royal tombs. Some scientists believe a volcanic eruption, possibly Hekla 3, caused global cooling. This cooling may have stopped tree growth and made it harder to grow grain. This environmental change likely made it difficult for the pharaoh to provide food for his people.

Despite these hardships, Ramesses III built massive monuments. He added to the temples at Luxor and Karnak. He also constructed a massive mortuary temple at Medinet Habu. This complex is one of the largest and best-preserved in Egypt. Because of the era's instability, he built heavy fortifications around it. No other temple in central Egypt had required such strong walls before his time. These walls were necessary to protect the sacred site from the unrest surrounding it.

His life ended due to a violent internal conflict called the Harem conspiracy. This plot was led by his wife, Tiye, and her son, Pentawere. They wanted Pentawere to take the throne instead of the chosen successor, Ramesses IV.

Trial documents show that 38 people were sentenced to death for their roles. Modern medical technology has provided new details about his death. A CT scan of his mummy revealed a deep knife wound across his throat. The wound was deep enough to reach the vertebrae and was fatal.

After the assassination, a succession crisis began. This crisis helped speed up the decline of Ancient Egypt. Ramesses IV took the throne as the new pharaoh. The conspirators, Tiye and Pentawere, had their names erased from history to prevent them from reaching the afterlife. The end of his reign marked a turning point for the Egyptian empire. While he saved Egypt from immediate collapse, the damage from wars and economic stress remained.
