Lê Lợi was born in 1385 in a noble family. His family lived in Lam Giang village in Thanh Hóa province. He was the youngest of three sons. His father, Lê Khoáng, was a wealthy landowner. Some people thought his family was Mường. However, recent studies show he was of Kinh ethnicity. This means he belonged to the main Vietnamese group. He grew up in a region with many different people.

In 1418, Lê Lợi started a revolt against the Ming. He called his group the Lam Sơn rebels. He used smart fighting methods called guerrilla tactics. This meant using small groups to surprise much larger armies. He also moved his camps often to stay safe. At first, the fighting was very difficult. In 1422, he suffered a major defeat. He even had to sign a peace treaty.

Lê Lợi did not give up after his defeat. He went to the Thanh Hóa highlands to rebuild. He worked with a scholar named Nguyễn Trãi. Together, they planned new ways to win. They marched south into the Nghệ An region. They fought many battles to gain control. By 1425, his rebels had liberated much of the land. They even captured a Ming supply fleet.
