Most of the land is near the coast. The area has many peninsulas that reach into the sea. It also includes many islands like Tsushima, Iki, and the Gotō Islands. These islands sit in the Korea Strait and the East China Sea. The prefecture borders Saga Prefecture to the northeast.

This region has a very special history of trading. For many years, it was a gateway between Japan and the rest of the world. In the 16th century, traders and missionaries from Portugal arrived in places like Hirado.

Later, during the Sakoku period, Japan stayed mostly closed to others. However, Nagasaki remained the only place for direct trade with the Dutch and Chinese. This happened at a place called Dejima. This long history made the area a major center for exchange.

Religion has also played a big role in this land. Many people in the region became Catholic during the 16th century. Later, the government banned Christianity. Some people, known as Kakure Kirishitan, practiced their faith in secret. They had to hide their worship to stay safe.

Today, these hidden Christian sites are very famous. They are even part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Many lovely Catholic churches can be seen in the area today.

Nagasaki has also faced very difficult times. In 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. This event destroyed many buildings and killed about 39,000 people.

The region has also dealt with heavy rain and floods. In 1957, big floods in the Isahaya area caused many deaths and injuries. In 1982, a typhoon also caused damage and loss of life. These events are a serious part of the local history.

Today, Nagasaki is a place of many busy cities and natural beauty. Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city. Other big cities include Sasebo, Isahaya, and Ōmura.

Sasebo is known for being a major port and a shipbuilding center. Much of the land is also protected in national parks. About 18% of the area is part of these natural parks. You can see many different landscapes, from high mountains to quiet islands.
