The peninsula stretches out toward the island of Hokkaido. It has a very special shape. Some people call it the "Axe Peninsula." This is because it looks like an axe. The thin handle connects the blade to the mainland. The wide blade part is very mountainous.

Nature has made many different things here. The east side meets the Pacific Ocean. To the north is the Tsugaru Strait. Mutsu Bay sits to the west and south. You can find the Sarugamori Sand Dunes here. These are the largest sand dunes in all of Japan. There is also a place called Hotokegaura. This area has seaside cliffs. Some people say the cliffs look like Buddhas. The land also has a volcanic interior. This part includes Mount Osore and Lake Usori.

History gives this place its name. Long ago, it was part of the Kita District. This was in the Mutsu Province. In 1868, the province was divided into new parts. The name Shimokita means "lower" part of the north. Today, the area is in Aomori Prefecture. Most of the land belongs to the city of Mutsu. There are also small towns and villages nearby. Many of these places are in a national park. This park protects the beautiful coast and mountains.

People use the land and sea in many ways. Most people live near the coast. They do not live in the high mountains. Many work in commercial fishing. Others work in forestry. Some people visit for tourism. You can find hot springs in Yagen Valley. The village of Rokkasho has nuclear facilities. In 2012, something amazing happened in the ocean. Japan set a world record for drilling. They drilled 2,111 meters below the seafloor. This happened off the Shimokita Peninsula.

Even the ground here is moving very slowly. Scientists study how the coast changes. For a long time, the land has been rising. This is called uplift. On the eastern tip, the land rises a little every thousand years. This happens because of faults deep under the sea. These faults bend the layers of rock. This movement has shaped the coast for a long time. It has been happening since the Eemian interglacial period. That was about 125,000 years ago. The earth is always changing in this place.
