It is part of the Ōsumi Islands. The island sits south of Kagoshima. It is the second largest island in that group. The island is quite flat. It has a subtropical climate. This means the summers are hot and humid. The winters are mild. It rains a lot during the year. The most rain falls in May, June, and September.

Many people live on the island. About 33,000 people live there now. The island is famous for making tools. Craftsmen make sharp knives and scissors. They use special ways to work with iron. These tools are used by chefs. Some scissors are used for bonsai trees.

Long ago, the island became famous for guns. In 1543, traders brought guns to the island. People in Japan called guns "tanegashima" after this place.

Today, the island is a place for space travel. The Tanegashima Space Center is at the southeast end. It is Japan's largest space center. It is run by JAXA. People go there to launch rockets and satellites. You can even see a "Rocket Marathon" race in March!
