Napoleon Chagnon was an American scientist. He studied how people live. This job is called an anthropologist. He spent many years living with the Yanomamö people. They live in the Amazon forest.

Chagnon wanted to know why people fight. He studied how families are related. He thought fighting helped some men have more children. This idea was based on biology. His book about the Yanomamö became a bestseller. He also made many films about them.

Many people disagreed with his work. Some said his ideas about fighting were wrong. Other experts said his work was not fair to the Yanomamö. They worried his books made people see the tribe in a bad way.

One man named Marshall Sahlins was a big critic. Sahlins even quit a science group because of Chagnon. Chagnon said his work was just honest science. He believed people should not hide the hard parts of life. He died in 2019 at age 81.
