Carlos Castaneda was a famous writer. He was also an anthropologist. An anthropologist is a person who studies human cultures.

In 1968, he wrote books about a man named Don Juan. He said Don Juan was a Yaqui teacher. He claimed the man taught him about shamanism. Shamanism is a type of traditional belief system. Many people believed his stories at first. Now, most scholars think the stories were fiction. This means they were made up.

Castaneda studied at a school called UCLA. He earned his degrees there. He was born in Peru. He moved to the United States in 1951.

Later, his work focused more on religion. He had a group of followers. Some people called this group a cult. He had a small circle of women. They were called his "witches."

Castaneda died in 1998. His books sold over eight million copies. They were printed in 17 languages. After he died, some of his followers went missing. One woman's car was found in Death Valley. The fate of the others is still unknown.
