Carlos Castaneda was a famous American writer and anthropologist. An anthropologist is a person who studies human cultures.

He became very well known for a series of books he published starting in 1968. These books described his training in shamanism. Shamanism is a type of traditional belief system. He said he learned these things from a Yaqui man named Don Juan Matus. Many people believed his stories were true when they first came out. However, most scholars now believe these stories were actually works of fiction.

Castaneda's writing style was very captivating to readers. He wrote about a "non-ordinary reality." This was a realm of the unknown that people could reach. He also wrote about a leader called a "nagual." In his books, Don Juan named him a nagual. This meant he was a leader of a group of seers. He later taught something called "Tensegrity." He described this as a modern version of magical movements. These movements came from Indigenous shamans in Mexico.

Castaneda had a very interesting life history. He was born Carlos César Salvador Arana on December 25, 1925. He was born in Cajamarca, Peru. He often told people he came from a noble family. In reality, he came from a poor background. His father was a watch repairman and a goldsmith. He moved to the United States in 1951. He became a citizen in 1957. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles.

As he grew older, his work changed. He moved from being a scholar to a religious teacher. He lived with a group of female followers. He called these women "witches" or "chacmools." He asked them to change their names. He also asked them to leave their families. Some people described his group as a cult. He started a business called Cleargreen Incorporated in 1995. This company sold workshops and books about his teachings.

Castaneda died on April 27, 1998. He was 72 years old. He died from complications of cancer. By then, his books had sold over eight million copies. They were published in 17 different languages. After he died, five of his close followers went missing. One woman named Patricia Partin was found in Death Valley. Her car and remains were discovered there. The fate of the other four women is still unknown.
