Paulo Coelho is a famous writer from Brazil. He writes novels and lyrics for songs. His stories reach people in over 170 countries. He has sold 320 million copies of his books. These books are translated into eighty-three different languages. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Coelho's journey to writing was not a simple path. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1947. At age 17, he stayed in a mental institution. He escaped from there three times before leaving at age 20. He once studied law to please his parents. Later, he left school to travel as a hippie. He visited South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe.

He worked many jobs before finding success as an author. Coelho wrote lyrics for singers like Elis Regina and Rita Lee. He also worked as an actor and a journalist. In 1974, he was arrested and faced hard treatment in custody. In 1982, he published his first book, Hell Archives. In 1986, he walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This long walk was a spiritual turning point for him.

His most famous book is called The Alchemist. A small house first printed only 900 copies of it. Later, a bigger house published it in 1994. This book became a massive international bestseller. He also wrote a book called Brida. Some of his books are autobiographical, meaning they are about his own life. These include The Pilgrimage, Hippie, The Valkyries, and Aleph.

Coelho's ideas often come from different traditions. He said the Sufi tradition influenced his writing. He once started a book project with Kobe Bryant. They worked together before the basketball player died in 2020. Coelho now lives in Geneva, Switzerland, with his wife, Christina. She is an artist. A film about his life came out in 2014. It is called Paulo Coelho's Best Story.
