Paulo Coelho de Souza is a celebrated Brazilian novelist and lyricist. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, a prestigious institution. His writing has reached a massive global audience over many decades. His books have sold more than 320 million copies worldwide. These works are translated into eighty-three different languages. His stories are published in more than 170 countries.

Coelho's path to literary success involved many different life experiences. He was born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a teenager, he was placed in a mental institution by his parents. He escaped from this facility three times before he was released at age 20. Following his parents' wishes, he initially enrolled in law school. However, he soon abandoned his legal studies to pursue his dream of writing. He spent time living as a hippie and traveling through South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe.

Before becoming a famous novelist, Coelho worked in several creative fields. He composed lyrics for famous Brazilian singers such as Elis Regina, Rita Lee, and Raul Seixas. He also worked as an actor, a journalist, and a theatre director. His career faced significant challenges during the 1970s. In 1974, he was arrested for subversive activities. During his time in custody, he was subjected to torture. These difficult experiences occurred long before he achieved international fame.

His literary career began with several early attempts at publishing. In 1982, he published his first book, titled Hell Archives. This book did not achieve much success at the time. In 1986, he contributed to a work called the Practical Manual of Vampirism. He later tried to remove this book from shelves because he felt it was of poor quality. That same year, Coelho walked the Camino de Santiago in northwestern Spain. This pilgrimage served as a major spiritual turning point in his life.

This spiritual shift led to the creation of his most famous works. He wrote The Pilgrimage, which was published in 1987. A year later, he wrote his most famous novel, The Alchemist. Initially, a small Brazilian publishing house printed only 900 copies. They even decided not to reprint the book at first. However, Coelho found a larger publishing house later on. After the publication of his book Brida, The Alchemist saw much greater commercial success. In 1994, HarperCollins published the book, helping it become an international bestseller.

Coelho's writing often explores different spiritual and philosophical themes. He has noted that the Sufi tradition influenced his work. This influence is particularly visible in The Alchemist and his later book, The Zahir. His bibliography includes various styles of writing. Some of his novels are autobiographical, such as Hippie, The Valkyries, The Pilgrimage, and Aleph. Other books, like Maktub and The Manual of the Warrior of Light, are collections of essays or teachings.

Coelho has also engaged in unique collaborations with other famous figures. In 2016, the professional basketball player Kobe Bryant contacted him. They intended to work together on a children's book project. They began writing the book together in the months before Bryant's death in a helicopter crash in January 2020. Following the death of the athlete, Coelho decided to discontinue the project. His life has also been portrayed on screen. A biographical film titled Paulo Coelho's Best Story premiered in Brazil in 2014.

Today, Coelho's work remains a subject of discussion among readers and critics. While he describes himself as a Catholic, some critics argue his views are incompatible with the faith. They point to his use of New Age, pantheist, and relativist themes. Some reviewers have also called his later works superficial. Despite these critiques, his impact on global literature is immense. He currently resides in Geneva, Switzerland, with his wife, the artist Christina Oiticica.
