She is often called the world's most widely read Spanish-language author. Her literary style frequently utilizes magical realism, a genre where fantastical elements intersect with realistic settings. Allende uses her fiction to weave together myth, memory, and history. Her stories often focus on the lives of women and their struggle against patriarchal structures. Through her work, she explores themes of oppression and liberation. These narratives allow her to pay homage to the strength of women across different eras.

Allende's writing process is defined by a remarkably disciplined routine. She works on a computer from Monday through Saturday. Her working hours begin at 09:00 and conclude at 19:00. She also follows a specific seasonal tradition for her creative output. Every year, she begins her writing on January 8th. This tradition started in 1981 following a significant personal event. It began when she wrote a letter to her dying grandfather. That single letter eventually evolved into her debut novel, *The House of the Spirits*.

Before her success as a novelist, Allende held various professional roles. She worked with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Santiago and Brussels. She also spent time as a translator for romance novels in Chile. During this period, she was dismissed for making unauthorized changes to the text. She altered the dialogue of heroines to make them sound more intelligent. She also changed certain endings to allow women more independence. Later, she worked in journalism and television production in Chile. The famous poet Pablo Neruda once advised her to become a novelist instead of a journalist.

Political upheaval in Chile profoundly shaped her career path. In 1973, a military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the government. Isabel Allende's cousin, Salvador Allende, was the President of Chile during this time. Following the coup, Isabel had to arrange safe passage for people on wanted lists. Eventually, she received death threats and was forced into exile. She moved to Venezuela, where she lived for 13 years. She has stated that this exile made her a serious writer.

Being away from Chile prevented her from being trapped by social expectations.

Her literary success is reflected in massive commercial figures. Her novels have been translated into more than 42 different languages. To date, her books have sold more than 77 million copies worldwide. *The House of the Spirits*, published in 1982, was a major turning point. Although many Latin American publishers initially rejected it, it was eventually published in Barcelona. The book soon saw more than two dozen editions in Spanish. Her work continues to reach diverse audiences through various genres, including memoirs like *Paula* and *The Sum of Our Days*.

Allende has received numerous prestigious international honors for her contributions. In 2004, she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2010, she was awarded the National Literature Prize of Chile. President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014. She was also the first woman to receive the Gabriela Mistral Order of Merit in 1994.

Additionally, she has received honorary doctorates from institutions like Harvard University. Her impact is recognized globally, even being named a "literary legend" by *Latino Leaders Magazine*.

Beyond her books, Allende is a dedicated advocate for social causes. She is a lifelong feminist who has often spoken about gender inequality. She has also expressed support for the LGBTQ community, Black Lives Matter, and the MeToo movement. In 1996, she established the Isabel Allende Foundation to honor her daughter, Paula.
