The Yahi were a group from the mountains of California. They lived in small groups called bands. These groups did not have one single leader. Instead, they lived in a way where everyone was equal. They were hunter-gatherers, which means they found food in nature. They lived in mountain canyons and stayed away from others. This helped them protect their way of life for a long time.

Life changed deeply for the Yahi in the 1800s. During the California Gold Rush, many settlers arrived in the area. These settlers brought new problems to the land. Gold mining made the water dirty and harmed the fish. The deer that the Yahi hunted became harder to find. Settlers also brought new sicknesses like measles and smallpox. Many Yahi people died because of these changes. In 1865, a violent attack called the Three Knolls Massacre happened. Many Yahi were killed during this time. Ishi and his family had to hide in the woods to stay safe. They lived in hiding for 44 years.

Scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, met him. They took him to San Francisco to live and work. He worked as a janitor at a museum building. They called him "Ishi," which means "man" in the Yana language. This was an adopted name. In his culture, you did not say your own name. You waited for another person to say it for you. Since Ishi was alone, he had no one to name him.

While living at the university, Ishi shared his knowledge. He was a master at making stone tools.

He showed scientists how to make stone arrowheads. He used a special tool called an "Ishi stick." This stick helped him flake the stone into sharp shapes. He also showed people how to use a bow and arrow. Scientists recorded his voice on wax cylinders. These recordings captured him speaking and singing in the Yahi language. These sounds are very important today. They help us understand a culture that was almost lost.

Ishi died on March 25, 1916, from a sickness called tuberculosis. He was a friend to many people at the university. One doctor, Saxton Pope, even hunted with him. After he died, his remains were kept in different places. In the year 2000, his remains were finally returned to his people.
