Long before many people moved to California, many different groups lived there.

These people spoke many different languages and lived in many groups. The largest group was the Chumash people, with about 10,000 people. These groups knew how to take care of the land very well. They used fire to help certain plants and fungi grow. They also used many ways to farm, like weeding and irrigation. This helped them find plenty of food like acorns, berries, and fish.

New people arrived in California at different times in history. First, Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in 1769. They built 21 missions to spread their religion and expand their empire. Later, Mexico took control of the land from Spain. Then, the United States took control after the Mexican-American War. This change brought many new settlers to the region. Many of these people came because of the California gold rush. This period of change was very hard for the Native people.

Between 1846 and 1873, a terrible series of events occurred. This time is often called the California genocide. During this time, many Native people were killed by soldiers and settlers. It is estimated that between 9,492 and 16,094 people were killed. Many others died from starvation or being worked too hard.

Some people were also kidnapped to work on ranches. For example, John Sutter kidnapped over 2,000 people for his ranch. These people lived in very poor and difficult conditions.

Laws and government actions made life even harder for Indigenous people. In 1850, a law was passed that allowed settlers to force Native people into labor. Some cities even paid money to people for killing Native Americans. The government also moved people to reservations. Later, children were taken from their families to go to boarding schools.

Because of these many hard things, the population dropped a lot. It went from about 150,000 people in 1848 to only 16,000 by 1900.

Today, people are working to understand this part of history. In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom called these events a genocide. He apologized for the violence and unfair treatment in the past. He also created a "Truth and Healing Council" to help people learn the truth.
