Lewis Binford was a famous American archaeologist. An archaeologist is a person who studies the past. He was born in 1931 in Virginia. As a child, he loved animals. He first studied biology in college.

Lewis joined the military after he finished school. While he was there, he found old items in tombs. This work made him want to study people. He went to many colleges to learn more. He even ran a small business to pay for school.

In the 1960s, Lewis had new ideas. He led a group called the "New Archaeologists." They wanted to use science to study the past. They did not just want to collect old pots. They wanted to know how people behaved. This was a big change for his field.

Lewis also studied ethnoarchaeology. This is a way to learn about the past by watching people today. He went to Alaska to live with the Nunamiut people. He watched how they hunted and lived. This helped him understand old stone tools. He was a great teacher. An asteroid is named after him.
