She was known as the "Queen of Fado." Fado is a special type of music that carries a feeling called saudade. This word describes a deep longing or a painful yearning for the past. Amália helped make this music famous all over the world. She became the best-selling Portuguese artist in the history of recorded music. People still remember her for her powerful and intense voice.

Amália's life started with hard work in Lisbon. She was born in the parish of Pena around 1920. As a child, she grew up in poverty. She worked odd jobs to help her family. One job was selling fruit on the quays of Lisbon. She began her singing career around 1935. Her first professional job in a fado venue was in 1939. Later, she met a composer named Frederico Valério. He wrote many beautiful melodies for her to sing.

Her career took her to many different countries. In 1943, she traveled to Madrid for a gala party. She performed in Brazil in 1945 and made her first recordings there. She also sang in Berlin, Mexico, and France. In 1953, she was the first Portuguese artist on American television. She spent many seasons performing at the Olympia hall in Paris. Between 1956 and 1992, she returned to that stage many times. She even sang in the Soviet Union and Romania.

Amália was not just a singer, but also a talented actress. She made her film debut in 1946 in a movie called Capas Negras. Her most famous movie was titled Fado, released in 1947. She won Portugal's Film Award for Best Actress for that role. She won another acting award in 1965 for a non-singing part. Amália worked with many great poets and musicians. One important partner was the composer Alain Oulman. He wrote melodies for a fado style called "Busto."

Even in her later years, Amália remained a living legend. She celebrated her 50th career anniversary with a huge concert in 1990. That same year, she won an award for World's Best-Selling Portuguese Artist. She gave her very last concert in 1994 in Lisbon. Amália died in 1999 at the age of 79. The Portuguese government declared three days of national mourning. Today, her house in Lisbon is a museum.
