He was a master of fado, which is a traditional style of music. His mother, Lucília do Carmo, was also a very well-known singer. Carlos helped make fado special by bringing it into a new era. He was known for his unique voice and his many talents. People remember him as a very important artist of his generation. He helped many other singers find their own paths in music.

His journey in music began in a very personal way. In 1962, his father passed away. Carlos returned from studying in Switzerland to help his mother. They ran a fado house called the Faia in Lisbon. While helping there, he began to sing for the guests. His friends encouraged him to perform more often. Soon, he started recording his own songs in 1963.

Carlos did not just sing traditional fado. He liked to try new things with his music. He added large orchestras to his songs. He also brought in sounds from jazz music. He was inspired by many different styles of music. These included French pop and Brazilian bossa nova. He even worked with the singer Elis Regina in Brazil.

He became a star all over the world. In 1976, he represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest. He sang the song "Uma flor de verde pinho." That song finished in 12th place in the contest. He also released a famous album in 1977. It was called "Um Homem na Cidade." This album used poems about the city of Lisbon. In 1984, he recorded the first CD ever made in Portugal.

Carlos received many big honors during his long career. He won a Portuguese Golden Globe in 1998. In 2014, he won a Latin Grammy lifetime achievement award. This was the first time a Portuguese artist won this award. He performed in famous places like New York City and London. Carlos passed away on January 1, 2021, at age 81. He left behind a huge legacy for Portuguese music.
