He was a master of fado, a traditional music style from Portugal. He is often called the most important male fadista of his generation. His work served as a bridge between old traditions and new musical styles. He helped fado evolve during a time of great change in his country. His unique voice and innovative spirit made him a global star.

His musical journey began through family necessity. In 1962, his father, Alfredo de Almeida, passed away. Carlos had been living in Switzerland to study languages and hotel management. He returned to Lisbon to help his mother, Lucília do Carmo, run their fado house. This establishment was called the Faia. While working there, he began to sing for the guests. His friends encouraged him to perform, and he started recording in 1963.

Do Carmo changed how fado sounded by adding new elements. He introduced large orchestras to the traditional genre. He also incorporated sounds from jazz music into his performances. He was influenced by many different musical traditions. These included the style of Frank Sinatra and French pop music. He also drew inspiration from Brazilian bossa nova. In 1973, he even traveled to Brazil to perform with the singer Elis Regina.

His career reached a major milestone in 1976. That year, he represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest. He performed the song "Uma flor de verde pinho." To prepare, he participated in the Festival da Canção. Organizers chose him as the only singer for that year's contest. His song finished in 12th place at the international Eurovision event.

In 1977, he released a landmark concept album. It was titled "Um Homem na Cidade." This album featured poems about Lisbon written by the poet Ary dos Santos. Musicologists describe this as one of the most significant albums in fado history. The lyrics referenced current events of the time. Do Carmo also achieved a technical milestone in 1984. He recorded "Um Homem no País," which was the first CD ever recorded in Portugal.

Do Carmo's fame took him to many world stages. He performed at the Royal Opera House in London. He also played at the Paris Olympia and the Royal Albert Hall. He sang in New York City and Frankfurt. His career was marked by many prestigious awards. He won a Portuguese Golden Globe in 1998. In 2014, he became the first Portuguese artist to win a Latin Grammy Award. This was a lifetime achievement award from the Latin Recording Academy.
