Tănase's deep connection to music began in her childhood. Her father, Ion Coanda Tănase, was a master gardener and florist. He owned a large nursery on the outskirts of Bucharest. This nursery employed many women from various regions of Romania. These workers shared traditional folk songs and tales while they worked. Little Maria listened to these stories and songs with great interest. These early experiences left a permanent mark on her musical soul.

Her professional career began in the 1930s. In 1934, she joined the "Cărăbuș" Theatre of Constantin Tănase. She made her real stage debut on June 2, 1934. At that time, she used the stage name Mary Atanasiu. In the fall of 1937, she recorded her first folk songs at the Columbia studio in Bucharest. By February 20, 1938, her voice was heard on the radio for the first time. This helped her build a growing local and international following.

During the difficult years of World War II, Tănase performed meaningful work. She traveled to sing for soldiers who were injured on the battlefield. In December 1943, she performed at a Christmas event for the Royal Cavalry Regiment. This event included King Michael I of Romania and several government members. After the war, she continued to work in many different roles. She performed in the Review Ensemble Theatre and the "Constantin Tănase" Satirical and Musical Theatre. She also acted in plays and appeared in films like "Romania" in 1947.

Tănase was also a dedicated educator and leader. In 1952, she was offered a position at Music School No. 1 in Bucharest. She worked in the newly created traditional folk song department. In 1962, she guided "Taraful Gorjului," which is the Gorj Folk Music Band. She did this at her own request to help the artists of the "taraf." Her career included many international trips. She traveled to New York City more than forty times.

Many famous artists expressed deep admiration for her talent. The sculptor Constantin Brâncuși said her singing inspired him. He claimed he could carve a "Bird in Space" for each of her songs. He viewed her as a symbol of all Romanians. The Russian soprano Lydia Lipkowska said Tănase's voice was like a miraculous potion. Even the Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller noted Tănase's influence. Müller said Tănase helped her truly feel the meaning of Romanian folklore.

Her legacy continues to reach new generations of musicians. The musical group Pink Martini named her one of their greatest inspirations. British musician Nigel Kennedy recorded a "Tribute to Maria Tănase" in 2003. The Romanian violinist Alexander Bălănescu also released an album inspired by her spirit. In 2013, Google Romania celebrated her 100th birthday with a special doodle.
