During the late 1960s, things were difficult for Veloso in Brazil. The country was ruled by a military government that was very strict. This government did not like the new ideas in Tropicália. In 1969, the government arrested Veloso and his friend Gilberto Gil. They were held in prison and then kept under house arrest. Eventually, they were told they had to leave Brazil. They moved to London, England, where they lived for two years. Veloso said that London felt dark and lonely to him.
