She was best known for her powerful, husky voice. Her music was mostly samba, a traditional Brazilian style. She also mixed samba with jazz. This made her sound very unique. People loved her because she stayed strong through many hard times. In 2000, the BBC named her a Singer of the Millennium. This was a huge honor shared with Tina Turner.

Elza's life began in the Moça Bonita favela in Rio de Janeiro. She was born on June 23, 1930. Her father, Avelino, was a factory worker and a guitarist. Her mother, Rosária, worked as a washerwoman. As a young girl, Elza played in the streets. She flew kites and spun wooden tops. Even when life was hard, she had a happy childhood. She even won money in a singing contest to buy medicine for her son.

In this song, she used scat singing, which is singing with nonsense syllables. She also traveled to Chile for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. There, she met the famous musician Louis Armstrong. Later, she recorded many albums with the label Odeon. These albums often featured duets with singer Miltinho.
