Her musical journey began out of necessity. When her son needed medicine, she entered a vocal contest hosted by Ary Barroso at Rádio Tupi. The prize money allowed her to buy the required medicine. As she grew older, her life included many responsibilities. She worked at the Veritas soap factory to support her family. By age 21, she was a widow raising five children. These children were João Carlos, Gerson, Gilson, Dilma, Sara, and Garrincha. She never lost her dream of becoming a professional singer.

Soares's life was marked by both great love and significant hardship. She had a long relationship with the famous football player Garrincha. This relationship brought social challenges and public criticism from Brazilian society. In 1969, her mother died in a car accident on the Presidente Dutra highway.
