Didi Kempot was a famous singer and songwriter from Indonesia. He was known for a musical style called campursari. This name means a "mixture of essences" in the Javanese language. His music mixed pop with local styles like dangdut and kroncong. Most of his 700 songs were about heartbreak and sad love stories. Because of these themes, people called him "The Godfather of the Broken-Hearted."

His journey to fame began with hard work on the streets. Didi worked as a busker in his hometown of Surakarta. Between 1984 and 1986, he sang for people on the sidewalk. He even lived in a very narrow room with eight friends. The space was so small they often slept on their sides. To make music, he used a simple tape recorder. He made demo tapes and sent them to many studios.

Music became his life after he moved to Jakarta. A studio called Musica Studios finally contacted him about his tapes. He worked with Pompi Suradimansyah to arrange his music. His early song "We Cen Yu" became a hit in Jakarta. In 1989, he released a song called "Cidro," which means "Broken." This song was not popular in Indonesia at first. It did not fit the funny songs people liked then.

Even though "Cidro" was quiet in Indonesia, it became a hit elsewhere. Many Javanese people live in the Netherlands and Suriname. Didi traveled to the Netherlands in 1993 for concerts. He also toured Suriname many times between 1996 and 1998. During those years, he recorded 10 albums for those regions. He even received an award from President Dési Bouterse in Suriname. His fame grew again in Indonesia with the album "Stasiun Balapan" in 1999.

Didi's music reached many different types of people. In the 2010s, younger people began to love his songs. Some researchers say this happened because people wanted to find cool new music. In April 2020, Didi held a live charity concert from his home. He raised Rp7.6 billion to help people during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also wrote a song called "Ojo Mudik" to help stop the spread of the sickness. Didi passed away in May 2020 in Surakarta.
