He was a master of a style called levenslied. These are songs with simple and sentimental lyrics that people feel deeply. His music remains very well-known in the Netherlands and Flanders. People loved his songs because they felt real and honest. He was a singer who connected with many different people through his voice.

His journey to stardom involved many different steps. He first appeared on a television show called Weekendshow in 1959. He was only eight years old at the time. Before he was a full-time singer, he worked many odd jobs. He was a flower delivery boy and a chimney sweep. He also worked as a butcher's apprentice and a construction worker. Eventually, he became a singing barman at a café called De Krommert. This job helped him build a reputation in his hometown.

Hazes' big break happened in 1976 with a specific song. He wrote "Eenzame Kerst," which tells a story about a lonely Christmas. He originally wanted another singer to record it. That singer suggested Hazes should record it himself instead. The single was a huge success and sold 70,000 copies in three weeks. This moment made him an instant star in his country. He went on to record 36 studio and live albums.

His career included many important dates and special moments. In 1981, he won the Zilveren Harp, or Silver Harp award. His album Gewoon André sold 500,000 copies during its first year. In 1988, he sang "Wij houden van Oranje" for the football championships. This song became very popular when the Netherlands won the European Championships. He also released a blues and rock 'n roll album in 1989. This album was called Dit is wat ik wil.

Even after he passed away in 2004, his music stayed strong.
