Her career is defined by an incredible ability to connect with diverse audiences. She has released an estimated 450 albums throughout her long professional life. These recordings feature at least thirteen different languages. She has sung in Greek, French, English, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Hebrew, Welsh, Mandarin Chinese, and Corsican. This multilingual skill helped her become a truly international star. Her distinctive look, featuring signature black-rimmed glasses, also became a recognizable part of her global image.

Mouskouri's unique singing voice is a central part of her musical identity. A medical examination revealed that she has only one functioning vocal cord. This physiological detail may account for her remarkable and distinctive sound. In her younger years, her voice was a husky, dark alto. As she matured, her range shifted to a ringing coloratura mezzo. This technical range allowed her to perform many different styles of music. She could move easily between classical opera and popular jazz.

Her musical education began in Greece during a difficult period of history. She was born on October 13, 1934, in Chania, Crete. Her father, Constantinos, worked as a film projectionist. Her mother, Aliki, worked as a cinema usher. The family moved to Athens when she was three years old. Mouskouri and her sister, Eugenía, attended the Athens Conservatoire. Although her sister initially seemed more gifted, Mouskouri possessed a deep inner need to sing. She began formal singing lessons at the age of twelve.

Mouskouri's path was not always easy due to strict academic rules. While studying classical opera, she began experimenting with jazz music. She performed with a jazz group at night with her friends. However, her professor discovered this involvement with a different genre. As a result, he prevented her from taking her end-of-year exams. She was even barred from a performance at the ancient amphitheatre at Epidauros. Consequently, she left the Conservatoire to perform in Athens nightclubs.

Success arrived through important musical collaborations and competitions. In 1958, she met the Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis. He was impressed by her voice and wrote several songs for her. In 1959, she won first prize at the inaugural Greek Song Festival. She also won first prize at the 1960 Mediterranean Song Festival in Barcelona. Her international breakthrough came with the song "The White Rose of Athens." Originally an adaptation of her Greek song, it sold over one million copies. This success established her as a major recording artist in Europe.

Mouskouri also found great success on television and in international touring. In 1963, she represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest. She performed "À force de prier" and finished in eighth place out of sixteen countries. This performance helped her win the Grand Prix du Disque in France. Later, from 1968 to 1976, she hosted her own BBC series, "Presenting Nana Mouskouri." The show featured various musical genres and international guest stars. Her ability to introduce songs in fluent English made her very popular with British viewers.

Beyond music, Mouskouri has dedicated much of her life to public service. In 1993, she became a spokesperson for UNICEF. She also entered the political arena, serving as a Greek deputy in the European Parliament from 1994 to 1999. Her many achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. In 2006, Eurovision presented her as the best-selling artist of all time. She received the Echo Music Prize in 2015 in Germany. Finally, she was honored with the "Honorary Victory" at the Victoires de la Musique in Paris in 2026.
