Born Nouhad Wadie Haddad, she is known by many poetic titles. These include "The Bird of the East," "The Cedar of Lebanon," and "The Voice of Lebanon." Her music is a unique fusion of Western and Arab sounds. Experts often describe her singing voice as airy, clear, and flexible. It possesses a prayer-like quality that differs from the heavy ornamentation common in traditional Arab music. Through her work, she became a symbol of Lebanese identity and stability.

Her musical journey began in the late 1940s at the national radio station in Lebanon.

After being noticed for her singing at school, she enrolled in the Lebanese Conservatory. There, she trained in poetic form and intonation under the guidance of Mohammed Flayfel. Halim el Roumi, the head of the Lebanese radio station, later appointed her as a chorus singer. He chose the stage name "Fairuz" for her, which is the Arabic word for turquoise. At the start of her career, she earned twenty-one U.S. dollars per month. This amount would be roughly one hundred ninety-five dollars today when adjusted for inflation.

Fairuz's career was transformed by her collaboration with the Rahbani brothers, Assi and Mansour.

They worked together at the radio station and developed an instant creative chemistry. In 1952, she released her first major hit, "Itab," which made her an instant star. The trio eventually revolutionized the blueprint for Lebanese music. Previously, the dominant style was Egyptian, featuring long songs lasting thirty minutes. The Rahbanis and Fairuz created a new prototype using the Lebanese dialect. They produced shorter, three-minute songs that focused on telling specific stories.

This new musical style helped shape modern Lebanese identity during a time of rapid cultural expansion.

Their performances evolved from small skits into full musical operettas. In 1957, Fairuz performed at the Baalbeck International Festival in the "Lebanese Nights" section. Although she was paid only one Lebanese pound for that show, she received the "Cavalier" honor. This was the highest medal for artistic achievement awarded by the Lebanese president. As her fame grew, she performed in major Arab capitals like Cairo, Damascus, and Tunis.

Fairuz's influence eventually reached the most prestigious stages in the world. She headlined at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, and the Olympia in Paris.

She also performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens. Her career has spanned over six decades of immense productivity. She has recorded nearly 1,500 songs and released more than 80 albums. Additionally, she has performed in 20 musicals. Her massive success is reflected in her sales, having sold over 150 million records worldwide.

During the Lebanese Civil War from 1975 to 1990, Fairuz held a unique role in her country.

While many other famous artists moved abroad, Fairuz chose to stay in Lebanon. She maintained a non-partisan stance and refused to take sides in the conflict. This approach allowed her to appeal to all Lebanese people, regardless of their political affiliations. Her music became a source of unity and a representation of stability during a time of great insecurity. She used her art to express dissent against the war and to promote themes of patriotism.

After her artistic partnership with the Rahbani brothers ended in 1979, Fairuz began a new musical era.

She began working almost exclusively with her son, the composer Ziad Rahbani. Ziad acted as a driving force to evolve her style further. He moved away from the nostalgic, folkloric nationalism of the previous era. His compositions helped Fairuz explore new musical territories. This transition ensured that her voice remained relevant to changing generations of listeners.
