Known globally as the "Voice of Asia," she represents a major figure in the Malay musical world. Her artistry is defined by her ability to sing in many different languages. These include Malay, English, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, and Tamil. Throughout her career, she has become one of the best-selling recording artists in Malaysian history. She has sold more than six million copies of her albums across the globe.

Siti's musical foundation began during her early childhood in Pahang, Malaysia. Born on 11 January 1979, she grew up in a family that valued music. Her mother, Siti Salmah Bachik, was a local traditional singer. Her grandfather was also a famous violinist. By the age of two, Siti was already learning traditional songs from her mother. She later joined a small band called Family Group, which was led by her uncle, Abdul Rahim Bachik. These early experiences provided her with essential exposure to live performance and vocal training.

Her path to professional stardom involved significant personal discipline and resilience. As a young child, Siti helped her mother prepare and sell homemade kuih, which are traditional treats. At age nine, she would wake up at 4:00 am to assist with this work. She even carried a makeshift table down three flights of stairs to set up a stall on the main road. Siti credits these childhood hardships with teaching her to be frugal and confident. She also noted that shouting to call for customers helped improve her vocal projection.

Siti's professional breakthrough occurred through competitive singing. After a failed audition for Asia Bagus at age 14, she persisted. In 1995, at age 16, she entered the RTM Bintang HMI competition. She met composer Adnan Abu Hassan during this time, who helped tutor her vocal performance. She ultimately won the contest by performing the song "Camar Yang Pulang."

Following this win, she signed with Suria Records and released her eponymous debut album in 1996. This first album sold over 800,000 copies in Malaysia.

Her career saw rapid expansion into international markets and major venues. In 1997, her popularity spread to Indonesia, where her story appeared in the magazine POS Kota. She became the first Malaysian singer to hold a live concert on the Indonesian television station Indosiar. In 1998, she performed at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in front of Queen Elizabeth II.

By 2005, she achieved a historic milestone at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She was the first Southeast Asian singer to perform a solo concert there. For this event, she was accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Siti has earned a vast collection of prestigious accolades and records. She has received 42 Anugerah Industri Muzik awards and three World Music Awards. Her popularity is reflected in her massive sales figures and concert attendance. In 2001, her record sales accounted for ten percent of all album sales in Malaysia that year. Her 2004 concert at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium drew approximately 70,000 people. This remained the most-attended concert in Kuala Lumpur until 2023.
