He was a singer, songwriter, actor, and lawyer. Many people called him the "People's Singer" or the "Patriotic Singer." He was also known as the "Singing Lawyer" because of his legal background. Sudirman was a man of many talents who impacted the music industry across Asia. He was a composer, a writer, a cartoonist, and an entrepreneur. His career showed how one person could master many different fields at once.

Sudirman's musical talent was defined by his clear, piercing tenor voice. This voice had a wide range and great dynamic control. He was especially skilled at singing very high notes. He could act through his voice, which helped him perform songs like the Latin-flavored duet "Bercanda di Pasiran Pantai." Sudirman was also famous for his versatility. He performed songs in Malay, English, Chinese, and Indian languages. During his shows, he often used prominent choreography. He even sketched portraits of his fans while he was singing on stage.

His professional journey began with a major victory in 1976. He entered the Bintang RTM singing competition held in Malacca. This competition was organized by the public broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia. Sudirman won the contest on 11 August 1976. This win served as his big break into the entertainment world. He also studied law at the University of Malaya during this time. He earned his law degree in 1980. Although he was called to the bar in 1984, he eventually left legal practice because he lacked interest in it.

Sudirman reached international success through several major milestones. In 1985, he represented Malaysia at the ABU Popular Song Contest. His most significant achievement occurred in London on 19 March 1989. He competed in the Asian Popular Music Awards at the Royal Albert Hall. There, he won the title of "1989 Asia's No. 1 Performer." He defeated many famous contenders from across the continent. These included singers from Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, China, South Korea, and the Philippines. He dedicated this historic win to his country and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.

His popularity resulted in massive, record-breaking public gatherings. On 14 April 1986, he held an open-air concert on Chow Kit Road. This was a Monday night, yet it drew a crowd of 100,000 people. The crowd was so large that fans were seen sitting on roofs and in trees. The Kuala Lumpur police noted the scale of the event was difficult to control. Some fans fainted or suffocated in the massive crowd and required hospital care. Despite these dangers, the event was considered a memorable night for Malaysia. His songs also dominated the music charts for long periods.

Sudirman's influence extended into literature and film as well. He acted in the 1982 film "Kami," which told the story of two orphans in Kuala Lumpur. The song "Pelangi Petang" from this film became an iconic work. As a writer, he produced an autobiography titled "Dari Dalam Sudir." He also wrote a comic book called "Sejarah Awal Sudirman." One of his children's books, "Taming Si Budak Pintar," won a writing competition held by Mobil-Mabopa. He even worked as a journalist and a columnist for various magazines and newspapers.

Beyond entertainment, Sudirman was known for his significant charity work. He frequently used his own money to ensure his concerts were successful. He also donated money to mosques and to groups like Yayasan Ozanam. Sudirman showed great respect for veteran artists in the industry. He often invited older performers to join his singing shows. He also provided them with generous donations to support them. His legacy continues through his nephew, Atai, who also became a successful singer and performer.
