She became a massive figure in Latin American music. Many people called her the "voice of the voiceless ones." Others called her "the conscience of Latin America." This was because she sang songs that spoke for people. Her music represented the hopes and struggles of many. She was a central part of the nuevo cancionero movement. This was a new way of performing folk music in Argentina.

Sosa was born on July 9, 1935, in San Miguel de Tucumán. Her family had French, Spanish, and Diaguita ancestry. Because of her indigenous roots, she was often called "la negra." Her parents were a day laborer and a washerwoman. She began her career singing for the Peronist Party. In 1950, she won a local radio singing competition. This win earned her a two-month performance contract. She recorded her first album, La Voz de la Zafra, in 1959.

Political changes in Argentina deeply affected her life and work. In 1976, a military junta led by Jorge Videla took power. The atmosphere in the country became very oppressive. Sosa faced death threats against herself and her family. In 1979, she was arrested on stage during a concert in La Plata. The military regime eventually banned her from performing in Argentina. This forced her into exile in Europe. She lived in cities like Paris and Madrid for several years.

Exile was a difficult period for the singer. She released the album A Quien Doy in 1981 while abroad. It included "Cuando Me Acuerdo de Mi Pais," written by Patricio Manns. The song expressed the sorrow of being separated from a homeland. Sosa said the struggle was a problem of morale and spirit. She returned to Argentina in February 1982. This was months before the military regime collapsed following the Falklands War. Her return included a series of successful concerts in Buenos Aires.
