His musical foundation began in his childhood in Mexico City. He was born into a family of musicians in 1948. His father, José Sosa Esquivel, was an operatic tenor. His mother, Margarita Ortiz, was a classical pianist. During his youth, José worked to support his mother and brother. He learned to play the guitar and sang in churches. He also performed serenades with friends to earn extra money.

As a young man, José explored different musical styles. In 1967, he formed a band called Los Peg. This group played jazz and bossa nova. He also performed in a trio where he played the double bass. His early solo attempts under the name "Pepe Sosa" did not find commercial success. However, a breakthrough occurred when he sang for a friend's sister. She worked for the managing director of Orfeón Records. This connection led him to sign with RCA Victor. His debut album featured a blend of boleros and romantic ballads. It included jazz and bossa nova influences from musicians like Mayuto Correa.

The year 1970 marked a major turning point in his career.

He represented Mexico at the II Festival de la Canción Latina. There, he performed the song "El Triste." Although he finished in third place, the performance launched him to stardom. He soon released "La nave del olvido," his first major hit in Latin America. Throughout the 1970s, he released many successful songs like "Paloma" and "Sentimientos." A radio DJ eventually gave him his famous royal nickname. By 1973, his talent reached the legendary Frank Sinatra. Sinatra invited him to record a duet, but an exclusivity agreement prevented the collaboration.

In the 1980s, José José achieved massive international prominence. He signed with Ariola Records and released several hit albums. His 1983 album, *Secretos*, was a monumental success. It sold over four million units and earned a Grammy nomination. He also released *Reflexiones* in 1984, which reached number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart. José José's career was not without personal struggle. He faced a difficult battle with alcoholism during his peak years. This struggle, along with a busy touring schedule, eventually caused his voice to deteriorate. In the early 1990s, his vocal abilities became noticeably weaker during live shows. He entered rehabilitation in 1993 to address his health. Despite these challenges, he continued to work in film and music. He starred in the 1995 movie *Perdóname Todo*, which was an autobiographical drama. He also released the album *Mujeriego*, which sold 180,000 copies in just two weeks.

Throughout his life, José José connected with many different cultures. His music reached non-Spanish-speaking listeners in Europe and Asia. He collaborated with diverse artists like Plácido Domingo and José Feliciano. He even recorded a Spanish version of Sinatra's "New York, New York."
