He is considered the most prominent figure in the history of tango. His influence on popular music during the first half of the 20th century was immense. People called him many names, including "The King of Tango" and "El Mago," which means "The Wizard." He possessed a rich voice with a wide vocal range. Because of this, music experts describe him as either a baritone or a tenor. He is recognized globally as the most famous tango singer of all time.

Gardel's musical career involved many specific stages of growth. He began by performing in local bars and at private parties. Later, he sang in a trio with Francisco Martino and José Razzano.

A major turning point occurred in 1917. Gardel helped create the tango-canción style with the song "Mi noche triste." This song was composed by Pascual Contursi and Samuel Castriota. The recording was a massive success, selling 10,000 copies across Latin America. He also collaborated closely with lyricist Alfredo Le Pera to write several classic tangos.

As his fame grew, Gardel expanded his work into international touring and film. He performed in many countries, including Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. During a 1928 visit to Paris, he sold 70,000 records in just three months.

He also became a movie star for Paramount. He appeared in films like "Cuesta abajo" and "El día que me quieras." These movies served as showcases for his singing talent and his appearance. His filmography includes many titles, ranging from silent films to musical features.

A complex mystery surrounds Gardel's actual birthplace. For many years, people believed he was born in Tacuarembó, Uruguay. This theory was supported by several authors and led to a museum being built there.

However, scholarly research has since confirmed he was born in Toulouse, France. He was born on December 11, 1890, to a laundress named Berthe Gardès.

Records from the Hôpital de La Grave in Toulouse provide this evidence. Some researchers believe Gardel may have filed false papers later in life. This might have been to avoid military registration in France during the Great War.

Gardel's personal life was often kept private to maintain his image. He was known to be very attractive to women. He had one major long-term relationship with a woman named Isabel del Valle. They met in 1920 while he was performing at the Esmeralda Theater.

Their relationship lasted for more than a decade, but they rarely appeared together in public. This secrecy was helped by Gardel's mother and del Valle's family. He provided her with a house and financial support during their time together.

Gardel's life ended tragically at the height of his professional career. On June 24, 1935, he died in an airplane crash in Medellín, Colombia.
