By age five, he had a record player to listen to music.

He started his career playing the bass guitar in different bands. He used many different names, like John Hudson and John DiFalco. He eventually joined a group called Drahdiwaberl in 1979. It was in this group that he began using the name Falco. He later joined a side project called Spinning Wheel. This was a big moment because he began to sing. He moved from playing the bass to being the lead vocalist. This helped him develop his own special musical style.

In 1981, Falco decided to become a solo artist. He worked with a songwriter named Robert Ponger to make music. His first big success was the song "Der Kommissar." This song mixed rap verses with a sung chorus. It became a number-one hit in many places like Germany and Italy.

He later worked with producers Rob and Ferdi Bolland from the Netherlands. They helped him record "Rock Me Amadeus" in 1986. This song was a massive worldwide hit. It reached number one on the Billboard charts in the United States. This made him the only artist to have a number-one hit with a German song in the U.S.

Falco was incredibly successful throughout the 1980s. His song "Vienna Calling" also became a popular international hit. He had many other famous songs like "Jeanny" and "The Sound of Musik." His estate says he sold 20 million albums. He also sold 40 million singles during his career. This made him the best-selling Austrian singer of all time.

He even released an album called "Out of the Dark" after he passed away. That album reached number one in Austria for 21 weeks.

Life was not always easy for the famous singer. He struggled with personal problems and used alcohol and drugs. He also had a complicated relationship with his daughter, Katharina. Falco died in 1998 at the age of 40. He was in the Dominican Republic when he died in a traffic collision.

Even after his death, people continued to honor his work. There is a statue of him in Gars am Kamp. A movie about his life was released in 2008. His music remains a very important part of Austrian culture.
