For a long time, the city of Vienna has been a very important place for music. It became a center for new ideas in the early 16th century. Back then, people focused on instruments like the lute. Later, the city became the capital of classical music in Europe. This happened because powerful leaders called the Habsburgs supported many artists. This support helped many famous composers live and work in the city.

Classical music is a big part of Austrian history. Many famous names are linked to Vienna. These include Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert also lived there. Johann Strauss II was another great composer from this era. Today, the Vienna Philharmonic is a famous group of musicians. They tour all over the world every year. They even hold a very important concert every New Year's Day in a place called the Musikverein.

In the high Alps, people have a special way of singing. This is called yodeling, or "juchizn" in the local language. It works by making very fast and repeated changes in the voice.

Pop and rock music are also very popular in Austria. A singer named Falco was the most famous solo artist in the 1980s. His song "Rock Me Amadeus" was number one in the United States in 1986. Other groups like Wanda and Bilderbuch became successful in the 2010s. Austria also does well in the Eurovision Song Contest. Conchita Wurst won the contest in 2014. Another singer named JJ won the contest in 2025 with the song "Wasted Love."
