Austrian literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Austrian literature is a deep world of stories and poems. Most of it is written in the German language. It is very closely tied to German literature. For a long time, writing in Austria was quite different from other places. In the early 1700s, a visitor named Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was surprised. She visited Vienna and found almost no writers at all.

The royal court used art to show its power. They liked grand music and beautiful palaces. They did not see books as a way to show power. This meant that literature did not grow as fast as music did.

Rules and ideas also shaped how people wrote. The imperial state used censorship to control books. This means leaders would ban books they did not like. Empress Maria Theresa had a group called the Chastity Commission. They wanted to keep public morals high. This often stopped new ideas from spreading.

The culture was also very focused on beauty and fantasy. This helped make Vienna a great center for music. However, it was not always the best place for writing experiments. Later, in the late 1800s, things became more open. This change helped a great many writers start to bloom.

In the Middle Ages, many stories were told out loud. Traveling singers called Minnesänger moved along the Danube River. They brought new songs and news to different towns. These singers often sang about love and war.

Some of the first male writers in German were Der von Kürenberg and Dietmar von Aist. By the 13th century, the famous Nibelungenlied emerged. It was likely made by an unknown poet from Austria. Poets would often teach their skills to younger students. One famous bard, Walther von der Vogelweide, learned from Reinmar von Hagenau in Vienna. This tradition helped keep stories alive for many years.

Austria has always been a place where many cultures meet. The old empire had many different ethnic groups. People lived in cities like Prague, Budapest, and Vienna. These cities were like small worlds with their own traditions.

Franz Kafka is a great example of this mix. He was born in Prague. He was a German-speaking, secular-Jewish, Austro-Hungarian writer. His life shows how many different identities can join together. Different lands like the Alps or the coast also changed writing styles. Each region brought its own special feeling to the stories.

Today, many famous authors come from this long history. Writers like Elfriede Jelinek and Peter Handke are well known.
