He is known for writing in the German language. Some people also say his work is very expressive. Many scholars believe his poems explore deep, personal feelings. His writing often has a sense of mysticism. This means his work feels connected to spiritual ideas. People still read his poems to find meaning today.

To write his famous poems, Rilke learned to observe the world. In Paris, he worked as a secretary for the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Rodin taught him how to look at objects very closely. This helped Rilke create a new style of poetry. These are often called "thing-poems" because they focus on objects. This change made his writing style very new for Europe. He also wrote a novel called The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge.

His life was filled with many travels across Europe. He was born in Prague in 1875.

His father, Josef Rilke, worked as a railway official. Rilke later traveled to Russia and met the writer Leo Tolstoy. He also spent time in Italy to see paintings by El Greco. These trips helped shape his thoughts and his art. He even changed his first name from René to Rainer.

Some of his most important poems came from special places. In 1912, he stayed at Duino Castle near Trieste.
