The Duino Elegies are a collection of ten deep poems. They were written by the poet Rainer Maria Rilke. These poems are very important to people who study literature. They explore big ideas like life and death. They also look at love and how humans feel alone. Rilke used the symbol of angels to show a perfect beauty. This beauty is so great that it can feel terrifying to humans.

Even though they are called elegies, they are not always sad. Many parts of the poems have a very positive energy.

Writing these poems was a long and difficult task. Rilke began the first two poems in 1912. He was a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis. He stayed at Duino Castle near the Adriatic Sea.

While walking along the cliffs, he heard a voice in the wind. This voice gave him the very first lines of the poems. He wrote them down in his notebook that same night. He finished the first elegy quickly after that moment. He then drafted the second elegy just a few days later.

It took Rilke ten years to finish the whole collection. He worked on them in many different places. He wrote parts of the poems in Spain and in Paris. During World War I, he faced many hard times. He even had to serve in the military. These struggles caused him to have periods of deep sadness. Because of this, the poems sat unfinished for long stretches of time. He did not return to the work for several years after the war ended.

In 1922, Rilke had a sudden burst of energy. He was staying at the Château de Muzot in Switzerland.

He described this feeling as a huge hurricane of the spirit. He wrote the poems in a very fast rush. He finished the Elegies in February 1922. He also wrote the Sonnets to Orpheus at this same time. He saw the birth of both works as a single event. The poems were finally published in 1923 by Insel-Verlag.

People also use his ideas in self-help books and philosophy. Some critics in the 1920s found the symbols hard to understand. However, the famous writer Hermann Hesse praised Rilke's skill. He said Rilke's poetry could sound like the music of the universe. His work remains a famous study of how humans face the world.
