She writes novels, poems, and essays. Her work often explores very difficult themes. She writes about violence, cruelty, and terror. Many of her stories happen in Romania. They take place during the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu. This was a time of a strict government. Müller lived through these hard times herself. She uses her writing to show how people felt. Her words help us see the lives of those who had very little.

Müller has a very special way of making her texts. She is known for being a true poet of words. One way she works is by using small scissors.

She uses nail scissors to cut single letters from newspapers. She then puts these letters together to create new writing. A critic once called her workspace a true poet's workshop. This method helps her create very careful and strong prose. She uses these tools to build her unique literary style.

Müller was born on August 17, 1953.

She grew up in a village called Nițchidorf. This village was in the Romanian Banat region. Her family were Banat Swabian Catholic farmers. They spoke German at home. She learned Romanian later in grammar school. Her family history includes many struggles. Her grandfather was a wealthy merchant before the government took his property. Her mother was sent to work camps in the Soviet Union. This happened when she was only 17 years old.

Her career has led to many great honors. In 1982, she published her first book called "Niederungen." This book was about a child in the Banat region. She later joined a group called Aktionsgruppe Banat. This group of writers fought for freedom of speech. Müller lived in Romania for many years. She was not allowed to leave for West Germany until 1987. In 2009, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is one of the highest honors for any writer. She also won the International Dublin Literary Award in 1998.

Müller's writing connects different worlds and languages. She often writes about the German minority in Romania. She shows how language changes how we see the world. For example, she notes how Germans and Romanians name things differently. In German, a flower is called a "little snow bell." In Romanian, a similar flower is called "little tears."
