He was known for his very sad and dark ideas. People often call this philosophical pessimism. He wrote about hard things like suffering and decay. He also wrote about nihilism, which is the idea that life has no meaning. Cioran used a special style called aphorisms. An aphorism is a very short sentence that shares a big idea. He wrote these in both Romanian and French. His work was very personal and full of deep feelings.

Cioran's life was shaped by many different thoughts and experiences. He began to suffer from insomnia when he was twenty years old. Insomnia is a condition where a person cannot sleep well. This happened for the rest of his life. This lack of sleep influenced his writing a lot. He wrote his first book, On the Heights of Despair, because of his struggle to sleep. He often felt like an accident in a world that felt strange. He even thought about the idea of suicide as a way to help a person keep living. He explored these heavy topics in books like The New Gods.

His journey began in Rășinari, which was part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

His father, Emilian, was an Orthodox priest. His mother, Elvira, led a Christian women's group. Cioran moved to the city of Sibiu when he was ten. Later, he studied at the University of Bucharest. There, he met friends like Eugène Ionesco and Mircea Eliade. He also studied in Berlin in 1933 on a scholarship. In Berlin, he learned about many famous thinkers like Kant and Nietzsche. These studies helped him form his own unique way of thinking.

Cioran's history includes some very difficult and controversial moments. In his youth, he supported political groups that used violence. He once wrote that he was a "Hitlerist" in 1933. He also supported the Iron Guard in Romania. However, he later felt great regret about these choices. In 1970, he called his support for fascism a "folly" of his youth. He even changed his old books to remove those extremist ideas. He said he felt sorry for being carried by those movements. He wanted to move away from his past and start fresh.

In 1937, Cioran moved to the Latin Quarter in Paris. This city became his permanent home for many years. He lived a very quiet and private life there. He lived with his partner, Simone Boué, for most of his life. Although he stayed away from the public, he had many famous friends. He lived in Paris until he died in 1995. He died from a disease called Alzheimer's. He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris.
